I recently got the chance to explore Tennoji with my friend and her children. When I tell you this experience was different from my usual adventures, I mean that in the best way possible.
It’s one thing to sightsee around Osaka, but it’s another thing to actually become part of an adventure where you have to pay attention to your surroundings, solve clues, and explore the city in a completely different way. I’m always looking for unique things to do in Japan, so you can imagine how excited I was about this fun mystery walk.
If you’re searching for a family-friendly activity in Osaka or simply want a unique sightseeing experience, this is definitely worth considering.
The Tennoji Mystery Walk is an interactive puzzle-solving game unlike any other. Imagine walking around Tennoji for one to three hours while solving clues, exploring different landmarks, and slowly uncovering a mystery.
It’s a wonderful activity for children, couples, families, solo travelers, and even groups of friends.
The way it works is simple. You receive a mystery booklet and begin solving a series of puzzles that lead you to different locations around Tennoji. Each clue brings you one step closer to solving the mystery, and if you complete everything successfully, you’ll even receive a prize at the end!
It’s sightseeing mixed with an escape room, treasure hunt, and puzzle game all rolled into one.
My friend was kind enough to treat me to this fun mystery adventure. The tickets vary in price depending on whether you purchase the Japanese version or the English version, as well as whether you’re staying at one of the participating hotels.
For reference, the English version of the mystery walk (if you are not a guest at the hotel that holds this event) costs 2,500 yen, while the Japanese version (if you’re not a guest) was around 1,500 yen. If you’re confident in your Japanese skills, the Japanese version is definitely the cheaper option and probably an even bigger challenge!
After purchasing our tickets, the hotel staff gave us the mystery booklet, explained the rules, and then we were free to begin our adventure whenever we were ready.
Walking around Tennoji while solving riddles completely changed the way I looked at the area. Instead of simply passing by buildings and streets, I actually found myself observing everything around me.
I noticed details that I normally would have walked right past. It made the entire neighborhood feel like one giant puzzle waiting to be solved.
It was honestly a really fun way to create memories together. To add to that though…
I’ll be honest…
Some of the puzzles were pretty difficult!
Even with my friend, her three children, and me all working together, there were moments where we were completely stuck. The children had a great time trying to figure everything out, and honestly, so did we adults.
Thankfully, if you get stuck, there are QR codes throughout the booklet that provide hints. They don’t immediately give away the answers, but they definitely help point you in the right direction without completely ruining the fun.
Besides, it’s all about the challenge, right?
If you’re looking for a fun way to get your daily steps in, this activity is perfect.
Since you’re not part of a guided tour, you’re completely free to explore at your own pace. If you see a cute café, interesting shop, or delicious-looking restaurant along the route, you can stop whenever you like before continuing the mystery.
We actually stopped at a really delicious izakaiya during our adventure, and it made the day feel even more relaxing.
One thing I really appreciated was that it never felt rushed.
Overall, I genuinely enjoyed this experience.
More importantly, the kids absolutely loved it. I think that’s what made this activity so memorable.
I highly recommend the Tennoji Mystery Walk for tourists visiting Osaka, families with children, couples looking for a unique date idea, or even long-term residents like me who want to experience a familiar area in a completely different way.
Even after living in Japan for many years, this activity reminded me that there are still so many unique places and fun experiences waiting to be discovered.
The entire mystery took us around 2–3 hours to complete. Once you’re finished, simply return your completed mystery booklet to the hotel to receive your prize.
It’s a simple but satisfying way to end the adventure.
