Looking for something fun and unique to do in Japan? Want to blow off some steam—literally? Head to a Shisha bar in the Kansai area and discover one of Japan’s trendiest nightlife experiences.

What is Shisha?
In Japan, it’s commonly referred to as “shisha,” but it’s known globally as hookah. Shisha refers to the flavored tobacco, while hookah is the pipe you use to smoke it. If you’re like me, you probably used to call the entire thing “hookah,” but now you know the difference!
There are tons of shisha flavors for every type of personality. Personally, I’m a fan of fruity blends that are sweet and smell amazing—think orange, peach, or even soda flavored.
Why is Shisha So Popular in Japan?
Shisha bars seem to be popping up on every street corner in Japan’s major cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. Wondering why everyone’s so obsessed? Here are a few reasons:
A couple of reasons that hookah is popular are:
- They’re incredibly Instagrammable and aesthetically pleasing. Just check out my pictures below!
- They offer a calm and cozy place to unwind. Whether you choose nicotine-free or traditional shisha, it’s a laid-back experience.
- Many people see it as a safer, more social alternative to cigarettes. For those trying to quit smoking, shisha is often viewed as a “healthier” option.

I’ve saved the best for last. Drum roll please….
I’ve been to Musch three times, and whether I went just to eat or to actually smoke shisha, it was always a vibe. I’ve had the café service twice, and recently tried their shisha for the first time.
My Shisha Experience at Musch
I was super excited to visit the Namba location. I’d previously gone to the Umeda branches to chill with friends, but this was my first time trying the actual shisha. My friend, who doesn’t smoke, was curious but unsure about the experience.
We ordered:
- Strawberry cake and chai tea (me)
- Oreo cake and a very tangy lemonade (my friend)
- Orange/Coca-Cola flavored shisha for me
The food was fantastic, and the shisha was smooth and sweet—perfect for someone like me who never smokes. It was chill, flavorful, and not overwhelming at all.
We ended up chatting for over two hours. The café was relaxing, and I want to give a special shoutout to the amazing staff—they were so kind and helpful throughout our visit!
Even though my friend didn’t smoke, she had a blast just enjoying the atmosphere, sipping lemonade, and watching me puff clouds. It really proves that shisha bars are great whether you’re there to smoke or just enjoy dessert.
Happy Shishaing!
Even if you’re not into smoking, I highly recommend visiting a shisha lounge in the Kansai area. The calm, cozy, and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere is perfect for socializing, relaxing, or even just treating yourself to dessert and a drink.
Personally, I love going just for the café service—the cakes and drinks alone are worth the trip! Each of the shisha bars I’ve mentioned brings something unique to the table, but Musch in Namba holds a special place in my heart. 💖Everyone deserves a little self-care, and a shisha bar might just be your next favorite way to unwind.
Until next time, say happy, healthy, and relaxed.
