 Writers in Japan

If you’re like me, you’re a writer in search of a creative community where you can meet and network with other authors, translators, and creatives around you.

Learning about the Japan Writers Conference was something I was genuinely excited about, and something I now want to share with you in case you are also thinking about attending a writing conference in Japan.

Living in Japan as a writer can sometimes feel isolating, especially if you are working on novels or long-term creative projects. That’s why events like this are SO important — they bring writers together in one space.

What is the Japan Writers Conference?

The Japan Writers Conference is a gathering where authors, editors, translators, and creatives come together for lectures and workshops during a two-day event.

The event is held annually and is open to both Japanese and international attendees. It is for anyone who writes or anyone who aspires to write.

You can check out their official website here:

Things You Should Consider

There are a few reasons I’m mentioning this event now, even though it takes place in November.

1)Proposal Acceptance (SUPER IMPORTANT!)

They are currently accepting proposals for people who want to give lectures at the conference. If you have writing techniques, storytelling tips, or publishing knowledge, you can apply to be a speaker and share your experience with other writers in Japan.

The proposal deadline is July 8th, and results are announced in late July.

The categories you can submit under include:

  • Fiction/ Non-fiction
  • Poetry
  • Miscellaneous

These categories are also how lectures and workshops are organized during the conference.

It’s a rare opportunity if you want to build credibility as a writer in Japan or connect with other creatives in a professional setting.

2)Hotels

Please book early!

If you are planning to attend this writing conference in Japan, I highly recommend booking your hotel well in advance.

Don’t make the same mistake I did by waiting until one month before the event when everything near the venue was completely booked. I had to scramble at the last minute to figure out accommodation, which added unnecessary stress to the experience.

3)Experience Level Doesn’t Matter

One of the best things about this conference is that it welcomes everyone.

Whether you have:

  • A full novel manuscript
  • A short story
  • Poetry
  • Or just an idea

Both beginners and experienced authors attend. It is a very supportive environment for creative writing development.:)

I personally loved hearing what other authors were working on. it was inspiring and motivating at the same time.

My Experience at the Event

Lectures

I attended both days of the event and went to as many lectures as I could. However, many of them take place at the same time, so choosing which ones to attend was honestly difficult.

Some of the lectures I attended covered:

-The publishing landscape in Japan and internationally

-World-building techniques for fiction writing

-How to get past the first draft

-Writing structure and creative development

Etc.

With how fast-paced everything was, the two days honestly flew by in a blur.

Dinner & Networking

The dinner was actually my favorite part of the entire event. 🙂

It gave everyone a chance to sit down and talk with people they had met during lectures. Everyone was incredibly kind, and I left feeling very inspired. (Even as introverted as I am, it was fun^^)

There is something really special about being in a room full of writers. Especially other international writers in Japan who understand similar struggles, goals, and creative challenges.

It made me feel like I wasn’t alone in the writing process.

Thoughts on the Conference

As someone who has been writing for years and will publish my first novel in bookstores next year, I was personally hoping for slightly more in-depth technical writing advice, especially around:

  • Advanced writing craft techniques
  • Editing strategies
  • Marketing and book promotion

However, overall, I still really enjoyed the experience and meeting everyone there.

My Honest Opinion

I would recommend this conference to anyone who is looking to network with other writers in Japan and hear real experiences from published and aspiring authors.

Traveling from Osaka to Tokyo just for the event was a bit intense, but I turned it into a full trip and spent time with friends, so it was worth it in the end.

If you are living in Tokyo or the Kanto region, this is honestly a great opportunity to connect with other writers and feel more motivated about your creative goals.

I’ve also heard that the conference has been held in different venues before, so I’m hoping it returns closer to the Kansai area again in the future.

Happy Writing

If you are also a fellow writer in Japan, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am currently trying to build a small writing community in Japan where we can support each other, share ideas, and stay motivated while working on our novels.

You can also check out my writing YouTube channel here.

I’m hoping to make more of a creative writing community in Osaka^^.

If you are another creative living in Japan, please remember you are not alone. There are so many of us here trying to build something meaningful through writing, storytelling, and creativity.

Hopefully, you can attend the Japan Writers Conference one day. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there too. 😉

Until the next article, please stay happy, healthy, and enjoy your creative life in Japan.
