Imagine being immersed in the most beautiful light and colors dancing around you. It feels surreal, right? You can live this exact moment if you check out the Kyoto Nippon Festival, one of the most unique and artistic events happening in Japan right now. If you are looking for things to do in Kyoto in 2026, especially something creative and visually stunning, this festival is worth checking out.

Fun and Art in Japan
Every couple of months, I write an article about museums, aquariums, or anything artistic that can help people express themselves or enjoy a fun and unique activity in Japan. I am so excited to bring more attention to the Kyoto Nippon Festival 2026, especially because it blends traditional Japanese culture with modern art in such a beautiful way.
It’s also an honor to talk about this year’s festival, given that they are collaborating with one of my favorite Japanese artists, Mika Ninagawa. Her work is truly unforgettable, and seeing it displayed in a historic Kyoto setting makes the experience even more special.
If you aren’t familiar with her, you can learn more from my previous articles about my adventures visiting her exhibitions:

What is Kyoto Nippon Festival?
The Kyoto Nippon Festival is a seasonal cultural event held every year in Kyoto. In 2026, it is taking place at the historic Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, one of Kyoto’s most well-known shrines.
This festival is a beautiful combination of Japanese tradition, immersive art, and cultural experiences, making it one of the most unique festivals in Kyoto. If you’re searching for Kyoto festivals 2026, art events in Japan, or unique cultural experiences in Kyoto, this is definitely one to add to your list.
Here is some key information:
* Location: Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
* Dates: February 1 – May 24, 2026
* 10th anniversary event
* Main artist: Mika Ninagawa
Who is Mika Ninagawa?
If you haven’t already heard of one of the most talented artists in Japan, you might recognize her through her famous parents, Yukio Ninagawa and Tomoko Mayama.
Even if you don’t know her by name, you’ve most likely seen her work in films like Helter Skelter, No Longer Human, or xxxHolic.
She is best known for her extremely vivid colors, combining bold shades of pinks and reds with elements like flowers, insects, and glass-like objects. Despite how beautiful her work is, there is often a deeper meaning behind it, exploring themes like femininity, life, and death.
While her accolades in film are impressive, she also collaborates with celebrities (like Chanmina) and continues to expand her artistic influence. Seeing her work featured at the Kyoto Nippon Festival makes this event even more special.
A ticket to Beauty
Tickets are priced at 3,500 yen for adults and 2,000 yen for children. It is relatively affordable compared to other art exhibitions in Japan. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly Kyoto activity that is visually stunning, this is a great option. 🙂

My 2026 Nipponbashi Experience
Arrival:
It was quite the journey from Osaka, but my friend Junko and I finally arrived at the shrine. As soon as we got there, we were greeted by beautiful lights at the entrance, setting the tone for the entire experience. It already felt magical before we even stepped inside.
Tickets:
We were able to get our tickets easily at the entrance. After purchasing them, we also grabbed some snacks and tea. We were starving when we arrived, so before starting, we sat in the break area right before the main entrance to eat and relax. (Please remember to eat a little something before you go because it is very easy to spend an hour there, especially if you want to take hundreds of photos like I did!)

An Amazing Time
If you go to the left as soon as you enter, you walk straight into a brightly lit wonderland, where Mika Ninagawa’s artwork hangs beautifully from the trees. It’s honestly the best photo spots at the festival.
As you continue walking around the shrine grounds, you’ll spot more of her stunning installations placed throughout different areas. The combination of traditional shrine architecture and modern colorful art creates such a unique atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else in Japan.
The shrine itself is huge, with many layers and different paths to explore. My friend and I actually got lost a couple of times, so don’t hesitate to ask the staff for directions (they are very helpful and kind).
Added Bonus
There is also an immersive theater experience called Hanayoi no Daichakai located in the Fugetsuden Hall (also known as the Six Shadows).
Although my friend and I didn’t attend, I heard from one of my clients that it was amazing. You will most likely need to reserve a separate ticket in advance (it is an additional ticket you would need to buy).
Overall Impressions
If I’m being honest, I would give this experience a 6 out of 10. I would mainly recommend it to people who are huge fans of shrines or die-hard fans of Mika Ninagawa.
The shrine itself was absolutely beautiful, and it was nice to see her artwork in such a traditional setting. However, both my friend and I were a bit surprised that there were only a few displays of her work. We expected more, especially compared to other exhibitions I’ve been to.
That being said, it was still a memorable Kyoto cultural experience, and I’m glad I went.(^-^)
Happy Art-Shrine Going!

I’m so happy that I was able to share this experience with Junko…and now with you! I really hope you can enjoy and appreciate the beautiful artwork that Japan has to offer. This is just one of many unique cultural events happening throughout the year, so don’t miss it while it’s still around!
Until the next article, please stay happy, healthy, and artistic!
