What’s Up, Kyoto?

By now, you probably know how much I adore Kyoto. From countless adventures through its temples, nature, and hidden alleys, Kyoto has captured my heart—and it will capture yours too! That’s why you can trust me when I say these activities are some of the best ways to enjoy Kyoto beyond the typical tourist spots.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, here’s a special list of activities you can easily enjoy in a 1–2 day trip. Ready? Let’s dive in!

10 Things for You to Do in Kyoto

1)Kimono Wear

Wearing a kimono in Kyoto is a must-do experience for any visitor. However, instead of the usual crowded spots, I want to introduce you to a lesser-known kimono rental shop located in Arashiyama.

IFU KIMONO RENTAL

This shop quickly became one of my favorites because of the wide variety of beautiful, high-quality kimonos they offer. Their selection makes the experience feel really professional, and they even offer a hair setting service that will have you looking like a regal princess. 👑

Alsoooooo since Arashiyama is a little outside of central Kyoto, you can make a full day out of it! Visit the famous Bamboo Grove, stroll through charming streets, sample street food, and enjoy nature. Just remember—return your kimono by 5:30 PM!

 2)Music to My Ears

Attending a live show featuring the shamisen and koto—an unforgettable fusion of history and harmony.

This next experience blew me away! You can attend a live performance featuring traditional Japanese instruments like the koto, shamisen, and taiko drums. Not only do you get to listen to beautiful music, but you also learn a little bit about Japanese history and musical culture.
Music+ places even allows you to try the instruments yourself! It’s a magical, heartwarming experience that proves music is truly a universal language.

3)All Fun and Games

Step back into your childhood at a nostalgic game store where you can play traditional Japanese games! 🎮

What makes this place special is its collection of old-school games you won’t easily find elsewhere. Think spinning tops, paper games, and retro toys that will bring a smile to your face.

If you come alone and the shop isn’t busy, the owner might even play a few games with you. It was such a wholesome experience reconnecting with my inner child—and trust me, everyone can benefit from a little playtime!

4)Owl Play Area

A unique encounter with gentle owls—soothing, cute, and unforgettable.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but visiting an owl zoo ended up being one of the highlights of my trip!

It’s a cozy, affordable spot where you can walk around, gently pet different kinds of owls, and simply marvel at how adorable they are. 🦉

You definitely won’t find something like this easily back home, and if you do, it’ll probably cost a fortune. This peaceful, therapeutic experience is a must-try—especially if you love animals!

5)Coffee Cafe

Kyoto is full of hidden cafés, and this coffee spot quickly became one of my favorites.

With delicious meals, beautiful desserts, free Wi-Fi, charging ports, and a second-floor view, it’s the perfect place to relax, study, or simply recharge between sightseeing adventures.

If you love café hopping like me, Kyoto has a ton of study-friendly cafés. One day, I’ll make a full article dedicated just to them!

Recently opened and already a gem, this Gion dessert shop specializes in aesthetic matcha sweets!

Located conveniently in Gion, it’s easy to stop by while exploring the area. Their desserts are not only Instagram-worthy but also some of the tastiest matcha treats I’ve had in Kyoto.

If you’re a matcha lover—or even if you’re not—you should absolutely treat yourself here.

7)Fry Me Up

📍De Fritas Stann

Fry lovers, this one’s for you! 🍟
This tiny shop specializes exclusively in French fries with over 10 unique sauces to choose from.

I’ve lived in Japan for years, and I’ve only seen one location like this—making it a truly rare find! As someone who could eat fries any day of the week, I give this place a 10/10.

Happy Kyoto-ing!

I curated this list thinking about what you could realistically enjoy during a 1–2 day Kyoto trip. If you’re like me and love food, animals, nice study cafés, and unique activities, you’ll definitely appreciate these picks!

Kyoto has so much more to offer than just temples and shrines. Whether it’s playing nostalgic games, hanging out with owls, or indulging in matcha desserts, there’s always something new and memorable to discover.

I hope you check out a few (or all!) of these unique spots. Stay happy, stay safe—and eat as much matcha as your heart desires! 🍵✨
