Japanese Experiences….in Japan?

I know — what was it Lana Del Rey said? “You’ve seen it all, you’ve done it all.” Or something like that. Whenever people come to Japan, they usually do the typical cultural experiences: eating Japanese food like okonomiyaki, trying on kimonos, enjoying beautiful Japanese shrines and temples, or wandering around the famous sightseeing spots in Osaka and Kyoto.
But let’s be honest…when you only have a few days in Japan, you often don’t have time to do it all. And that means you miss out on some of the deep cultural immersion Japan is famous for.
So what if I told you there’s one single place where you can experience multiple traditional Japanese activities — almost like entering a cultural theme park?
Well, let me tell you all about Michi.
Michi Michi Michi!
You can imagine my surprise when I discovered this amazing Japanese cultural center that offers so many traditional experiences all in one spot. And you can imagine my second surprise when I realized it’s located right in the fun, energetic center of Namba — right between Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori, and the Namba shopping streets.
Imagine shopping around Namba’s neon lights, eating takoyaki on the street, and then stepping into a beautiful, serene, traditional Japanese space where you can immerse yourself in Japanese culture, history, and hospitality.
What Does Michi Offer?

Michi offers a wide variety of cultural activities for tourists, foreigners living in Japan, and even Japanese locals who want to experience traditional arts in a new way. Some of their experiences include:
- Kimono Wearing
- Authentic Japanese Instrument Performances (Koto and Shamisen, with hands-on participation)
- Matcha Tea Ceremony
- Japanese Calligraphy (Shodō)
- Samurai Performance & Sword Experience
- Samurai Armor Dressing
- And much more!
But to really see what I’m talking about, let me walk you through my own experience below.
Access
You’ll be happy to know that you really don’t have to walk far at all. Michi is located just 4 to 6 minutes from major stations like Namba Station, Shinsaibashi Station, and Yotsubashi Station.
For travelers visiting Osaka or anyone exploring the famous Dotonbori nightlife, it’s incredibly easy to get to.
My Experience with Michi
I walked in, went to the front desk, selected my plan, and began my adventure. Michi offers three main plans:
A Plan
Adults: 8,800 yen
Children: 5,500 yen
Includes admission, tea ceremony, Japanese calligraphy, samurai show (you get to participate!), and the Japanese music show where you can also join in.
B Plan
Adults: 27,500 yen
Children: 27,500 yen
Includes everything in the A Plan plus kimono dressing.
C Plan
Adults: 55,000 yen
Children: 33,000 yen
Includes everything in the A Plan plus full Samurai armor dressing.
The official prices may seem a little high, but the incredible thing is that Michi often runs seasonal events and discounts. When I went, the discounted prices were:
A Plan: 4,980 yen
B Plan: 9,800 yen
C Plan: 19,800 yen
You can enjoy these activities for 1 to 3 hours, and you receive a stamp booklet to mark each activity you complete, which made it feel like a cultural adventure game.
Calligraphy

I really enjoyed the calligraphy experience. There were so many fun activities happening around me that I wasn’t even sure where to begin, but I’m glad I chose this first. They give you a poncho to protect your clothing from ink, and then you practice writing different kanji symbols.
I chose the kanji for “feeling”. After practicing on paper, I got to write it on a fan that I could take home — such a beautiful souvenir. The staff also asked which kanji I wanted written in my stamp book, and I asked for the word “gogi.” It felt so personal and special.
Sword Show
Next, I went to the samurai sword show — and WOW. They put on a reenactment of traditional Japanese sword fights with choreographed stunts. It was fun, exciting, and surprisingly educational.
We got to learn about real katana usage, samurai culture, and old Japanese history. Not to mention, the narrator had a very fierce beard, which made it even more entertaining haha.
If you’re interested in Japanese history, samurai culture, or traditional martial arts, this is the perfect activity.
Kimono Wearing
From there, I ran to get dressed in a kimono. I wanted to enjoy the rest of my time fully immersed in the traditional atmosphere. The kimonos were all so beautiful that it was genuinely hard to choose.
But once they dressed me, I felt like I stepped into another era of Japan, like walking through Kyoto streets during the Heian period.
Tea Ceremony
After getting dressed, I did the tea ceremony. It was such a calm, grounding experience. Not to toot my own horn, but the staff even praised my matcha whisking technique :).
Because geishas and maiko learn different whisking styles depending on their teachers and schools, every tea ceremony is unique. Experiencing it in this immersive cultural center made me appreciate the art even more.
Playing The Koto
By chance, I happened to catch the koto performer as she was playing, and I was completely mesmerized. The sound is so delicate and beautiful. I decided to try playing it myself — and she taught me so quickly!
If you ever wanted to play a real Japanese instrument, this is definitely the place to try it.
Seating/Praying Area
At the end of my activities, I took a moment in the quiet seating area to reflect and be thankful. Even though I had a general idea of what Michi offered, I didn’t realize I’d receive such a warm, welcoming, full-service cultural experience.
I genuinely wished I could have stayed longer.
Souvenir Shop
Before leaving, I stopped by their souvenir shop. They have beautiful traditional gifts, fans, accessories, and cultural items that make perfect keepsakes.
Happy Cultural Experiencing

As a whole, I’ve been dying to go back because it was such an amazing and unforgettable experience. I give Michi a 10 out of 10. The fact that they offer so many cultural experiences in one location is incredible — and honestly, a brilliant business idea.
If you tried to do all these activities separately across Osaka, you’d definitely spend a small fortune and a whole day traveling around. But at Michi, you can experience everything in just a couple of hours — perfect for travelers on a schedule or locals wanting a cultural refresh.
