Hair confidence starts with care—from roots to wrap.

I get it—the weather’s warming up, and with that comes the usual frizz, dryness, and breakage for your hair. If you’re like me, the constant switch between humidity and indoor air conditioning wreaks havoc on your curls. Our hair is always reacting to changes—seasonal weather, hormonal shifts, our diet, stress levels, and more.

Hair is a mirror of your internal health, which is why it’s so important to care for it from both the inside and out. You might remember some of my other health and beauty tips here:

Today, we’re diving into DIY deep conditioning—specifically homemade Japanese hair masks using ingredients you can find right here in Japan.

This article is for my girls with 4A-4C hair, but of course, you know your hair texture best. I recommend trying and adjusting the recipes below based on your hair needs.

Benefits of a Hair Mask?

Bee pollen adds strength and shine to your natural hair masks.

If you’re wondering why deep conditioning curly hair is so hyped up, the answer is simple: it works. On the rare days I do a hair mask, the results speak for themselves. Whether you’re rocking kinky coils, 4C curls, or heat-damaged strands, a hair mask is your best friend. Here’s why:

💧 Deep hydration for dry, brittle strands

💫 Defined, bouncier curls with less frizz at the root

✂️ Reduced breakage and fewer split ends over time

🧪 Improved hair elasticity and texture

🌿 Great for low porosity hair that struggles to retain moisture

If your curls are dull, weak, or lifeless, a rich natural hair mask treatment can nourish your hair from the root down to the ends. Your hair will thank you!

Japanese Ingredients That Work Wonders

Let’s talk ingredients! The best thing about making your own hair masks in Japan is that Japanese natural hair care products are not only effective but also easy to find. Here are a few traditional and modern ingredients to stock up on for your DIY hair mask routine:

Rice Bran Oil (Komenuka 油) – Strengthens, softens, and adds shine.

Matcha (抹茶) – Rich in antioxidants, perfect for detoxifying the scalp.

Umeboshi (梅干し) – A natural substitute for apple cider vinegar; helps clarify the scalp when diluted.

Japanese Honey (Hachimitsu はちみつ) – Locks in moisture and smooths the hair shaft.

Shikakai (しかかい) – A traditional herbal cleanser that promotes hair growth and scalp health.

Before jumping into the recipes, here’s how I recommend using your homemade mask for curly hair:

1)Start with freshly washed, damp hair.

2)Apply your mask from root to tip using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

3)Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap or wrap it in a warm towel.

4)Let it sit for 30–60 minutes.

5)Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

6)Style as usual.

***Use a hair steamer or heat cap to help the ingredients penetrate deeper. You can DIY this with a towel warmed in the microwave or purchase a budget-friendly cap online.
