Baby Baby Baby!
Pregnant? Congratulations if you’re expecting! What an exciting time! Navigating pregnancy and early motherhood can feel overwhelming, especially in a foreign country. Hopefully, this article gives you a few extra tools and peace of mind as you step into this beautiful new chapter of your life.
Pacify Your Needs: 10 Services for Pregnant and New Moms
1)Boshi Techou (母子手帳)
If you’re already pregnant or have a child, you may have received a Boshi Techou—a maternal and child health handbook. But did you know it also comes with vouchers for up to 14 free or discounted prenatal checkups? When you register your pregnancy at your local city hall, be sure to ask about this handy packet of support.
2)Home Visit from a Midwife/Nurse
When I was interviewing my Tanabe big sister about being a mother and what to expect now that she is a mother of two children, this was one of the services that she made sure to tell me about. One of the most comforting services available is the “Hello Baby” program (こんにちは赤ちゃん事業). After giving birth, a midwife or nurse can either stay with you in the hospital or come to your home to check in on your physical and mental well-being.
They help with:
- Breast massages (to relieve pressure or fever)
- Postnatal care and complications
- Emotional health and postpartum depression
If you’re a new or expecting mother, I really recommend taking advantage of this kind and supportive service. Along with a few other complications the mother may have as her body recovers from literally bringing life to the world. Not to mention, the midwives also check on your mental health and they also give sound advice to help you.
3) Maternity Classes
Maternity and parenting classes are often available for both pregnant mothers and fathers. Best part? Many are free or discounted! These classes usually cover topics like childbirth preparation, newborn care, and partner support.
Here is a list of three maternity classes that are offered in Osaka.
4)Support Hotels and Sanba Centers
If you’re unable to care for your newborn at home—or just need some extra help—there are post-birth support facilities where you can stay for a few days or even weeks. They offer:
- Meals and rest
•Medical and emotional care
•Newborn support
These centers provide a safe, nurturing environment during those fragile early weeks.
At these pregnancy facilities, you can stay for days (or even weeks!) to get assistance with caring for yourself and your new baby.
5)Babysitting Service
Sometimes a break is needed, and that is totally understandable. If that time ever comes for you, check out this babysitting service known as Babysitter Vouchers (ファミリーサポート / ベビーシッター補助). They provide emergency childcare services, which are often free or low-cost depending on your city and situation.
6)Priority Taxis
When you know your due date, PLEASE notify the Priority Taxis for Pregnant Women (マタニティタクシー). Register your due date with your local maternity taxi service, and they’ll prioritize you when it’s go-time. These taxis are trained to support pregnant women and help ensure you get to the hospital safely and quickly in an emergency.
7)Extra Financial Support
Pregnancy-related checkups can get pricey, but don’t worry—Japan offers Low-Income Assistance for Prenatal Costs (妊婦健康診査費助成). If your household income qualifies, many medical services are subsidized or covered.
8)Apps/Services for Pregnant Women
You probably already downloaded a few extra apps to really get to know what’s going on with your body and your baby. There are plenty of global apps to track your pregnancy, but also try Japan-specific ones like “Mamari” and “ninaru.”
Even if you don’t speak much Japanese, they offer:
- Region-specific medical information
- Appointment reminders
- Wellness tips for each trimester
Use a translation app to help you navigate the content—it’s worth it!
9)Dietary Support
As a new mom, eating right might be the last thing on your mind—but good nutrition helps recovery, milk production, and your overall energy. Many local health centers provide free consultations with registered dietitians to help guide you. Through any local service that has Prenatal Nutrition Support (妊婦の栄養指導).
10) Crisis Hotline and SOS Support
Lastly, I feel it is extremely important to include this last bit of information. Pregnancy and early motherhood can be emotionally and physically overwhelming. If you ever feel unsafe, uncertain, or just need someone to talk to, please reach out.
Here are a few organizations to contact for emergency pregnancy, postpartum depression, or domestic violence support (Osaka-based and nationwide):
- Osaka Women’s Counseling Center
- Support Center for the Victims of Sexual Violence in Osaka
- HELP (House in Emergency of Love and Peace)
