Are you planning to visit Osaka and wondering where to grab something delicious? Maybe you’re exploring the area and suddenly get hit by the munchies but aren’t sure where to go. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Let me guide you through Underground Umeda, where some of the tastiest food in Osaka awaits.
Umeda on My Mind~
If there’s one thing everyone knows about me, it’s that I’m an Osaka ギャル (Osaka gal) through and through! I’ve spent so much time exploring the city and its wonders that I could probably start a side hustle giving tours haha. One of the places I feel doesn’t get enough credit is Underground Umeda.
Since I use many of the train stations in Umeda for work, I’ve become pretty adept at navigating the intricate underground network. And let me tell you, it’s not just a transit hub—it’s a foodie’s dreamland! Whenever I have a little extra time, I always make a stop for a quick bite to eat. Now, I’m sharing some of my favorite underground spots with you.
Map to Treasure!
Let’s start with the layout. At first glance, the underground map of Umeda can look a bit chaotic. I get it—it’s like a labyrinth! But once you get the hang of it, it’s more like an adventure. Imagine you’re an explorer, navigating the twists and turns to uncover treasures. And in this case, those treasures are some of the most delicious meals you’ll ever taste.
First, let me tell you about the main areas that you can walk to underground.
- Midosuji line
- Hankyu line
- Hanshin line
- JR line
- Tanimachi Line
They’re all connected underground 🙂
Where to Eat Eat Eat!
Umeda’s underground is brimming with eateries ranging from cozy cafés to upscale restaurants. To make it easier for you, I’ve broken it down into three main food areas, each with its own vibe and specialties. Let’s dig into it!
1)Whity Umeda Food Court (Hankyu Line)
This bustling food court near Hankyu Station offers an incredible variety of cuisines. Whether you’re craving Italian pasta, Hawaiian burgers, or Vietnamese bánh mì, there’s something for everyone. You’ll also find classic Japanese dishes that are too good to pass up.
2)Midosuji Line Restaurants
Technically a part of Whity Umeda, this stretch is a long hallway lined with diverse restaurants. It’s especially lively in the evenings, making it a great spot for dinner or a quick visit to an izakaya. Whether you’re in the mood for sushi, ramen, or grilled skewers, you won’t leave hungry.
3)Ume-Kita Floor
For a more upscale dining experience, head to the Ume-Kita Floor. This area is known for its Instagram-worthy spots, trendy restaurants, and proximity to major landmarks like JR Osaka Station, Grand Front Osaka, and the new park in the Kita area. It’s perfect for a date night or a special treat!

4)CAFE 英國屋 ホワイティ梅田
This café has been my go-to spot for years. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited! This is one of my absolute favorite suggestions for sooooo many reasons—you can indulge in both savory dishes like curry and sweet treats like their strawberry waffle dessert. The waffles are topped with vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce, and fresh strawberries.
My Personal Suggestion: This café is ideal for when you and your friends have different cravings. You want something sweet? They’ve got you. Your friend wants something salty? They’ve got that too!
5)Merca Italian
If you’re an Italian food lover, Merca Italian is a must-visit. I’ve been here a couple of times, including once with my fortune-teller friend which you can read at this article here and once with my university professor. The cozy ambiance and delicious pasta and wine make it a fantastic spot for both casual lunches and special occasions.
6) FRESHNESS Burger
As a self-proclaimed fry fanatic, I can’t recommend their fries enough—they’re the star of the show! Of course, the burgers are also top-notch. Whether you’re in a rush or want a quick meal that doesn’t compromise on flavor, this is the place to go. 🙂
5)Unagi Kushiyaki Izumo
Looking for something fancy? Treat yourself to this high-end eel restaurant. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with enthusiastic cries of “Irasshaimase!” from the staff. Eel is a delicacy in Japan, and this restaurant serves it up in a way that’s as aesthetically pleasing as it is delicious.
Fun Fact: This place is famous for their HUGE eel bowls.
Happy Eating!
To all my fellow foodies: I hope this guide inspires you to explore the culinary wonders of Underground Umeda. Food is more than just sustenance—it’s a way to connect with people, share cultures, and make memories. As tempting as it is to dive headfirst into savory dishes and desserts, remember to eat your veggies too! Exploring Umeda’s underground food scene is like embarking on a treasure hunt, and I guarantee the rewards are worth it.
