Got an event where you need to dress up? Or are you just hoping to dress up and feel cute in Japan? Let me offer some tips to help you achieve your look and have your magical movie moment!
Getting Dressed Up In Japan!
As someone who was once new to Japan, I know the struggle of needing to get dressed up—or “glammed up”—and not knowing what to do, where to go, or how to even start! But don’t sweat it. Whether it’s for a wedding, a special event, or simply to feel fabulous, I’ve got tips to help you shine.
In this guide, I’ll share advice on makeup products, where to shop for cosmetics in Japan, and recommendations for achieving that perfect “natural glam” or “soft glam” look.
If you’re African American or have a more “chocolate” complexion, I know it’s difficult to find makeup in Japan. It’s difficult, but not impossible because we have the internet at the tips of our fingers haha. I really hope I can help you out though.
Now, let’s get started!
(Check my skin tone in the picture too in case you’re my shade and you’re looking for similar products to match to your skin color :).)
All You Need Is A Smile 🙂
I can give you tips on makeup and all that, but remember—your best accessory is your smile! Show those pearly whites confidently. If you’re looking for tips to make sure your smile is as bright as your outfit, check out my blog article: Oral Hygiene in Japan!
Make Me Up, Baby!
(I’ll apologize now for some of the pictures haha. It’s makeup I very clearly use, so it’s not in the most ‘pretty’ and perfect condition given that I through my makeup bag around. You can trust my suggestion given that though haha)
Natural Glam and Soft Glam in Japan
Let’s talk makeup. My approach to glam in Japan is simple, especially since I’m not big on wearing a lot of makeup. For those who prefer a minimalist yet fabulous look, here are my essentials for achieving a “natural glam” or “soft glam” vibe:
For a more natural look, these are fantastic
This glue held up perfectly during my pageant, even with multiple outfit changes and with my running around like a chicken without a head haha. It’s highly reviewed and I 1000% recommend it.
-
Eyebrows
Ultimate Brow, Retractable Brown Pencil
I used to use a black eyebrow pencil from Daiso, but switching to dark brown gave me a softer, more natural look. This retractable pencil has been my go-to ever since, and I can’t recommend it enough! I’m in love <3
-
Blush
Lastly, a blush for a soft natural glow!
For less than 400 yen, this blush is a steal. It comes in a variety of shades, but I always go for the one that gives me a subtle, natural glow.
-
Eyeliner
I found a great eyeliner…at the convenience store! Haha. I forgot my eyeliner at home and (luckily) found my new favorite eyeliner in LAWSON! It’s easier for me to hold in my hand and draw the line due to the size and length of the gel eyeliner. I bought the shades in brown and black (^-^)
The brand is &nd by rom&nd Eyeliner
Found at Lawson, this eyeliner glides on smoothly and is easy to use. I can guarantee you’ll love this one.
>I like to include a little white eyeliner in the corner of my eyes from time to time as well to get a more doll-like look.
wet n wild, Color Icon Kohl Eyeliner, 608A You’re Always White!
-
Mascara
Maybelline: Length Perfection Lashionista
My go-to mascara for the past five years has never let me down. It adds just the right amount of volume and length.
-
Eyeshadow
Excel brown eyeshadow (bought in PLAZA I think)
A bonus to add to this list. I use a brown shade that isn’t noticeable unless you look really closely. It’s not too noticeable, BUT I think it highlights and adds to my features. I think if people see me with this eyeshadow and without it, they can tell something is different, but can’t figure out what exactly is different haha. I either go for natural shades, or, gold for glam.
Glam Glam in Japan
I bought a LOT of makeup to practice with for the pageant, but on the pageant day, I decided to just keep it simple. I think this is great information for those that are struggling with finding makeup in their shade in Japan. For my beautiful ladies with a more chocolate shade like me, you may need to order online like I did and that’s okay. I am very grateful to iherb for keeping a variety of shades that I can use. Here are some I bought below.
-
Foundation
Finding foundation for darker skin tones in Japan can be tricky. I’ve had to order online, and I’m grateful for iHerb’s wide selection of shades. One option I’ve used is Maybelline Fit Me. I didn’t find my shade online, though they have some darker shades available.
This was the foundation I used a lot before when I was a junior in university.
<This isn’t the shade I own, but this is a link to Maybelline’s Fit Me that some people can use.>
-
Concealer
L.A. Girl, Pro Conceal HD Concealer
Great coverage and easy to apply.
Black Radiance, Concealer Stick
Another staple for women with deeper skin tones.
-
Lipstick
I don’t typically wear lipstick, but these are the colors I wore for the pageant :).
L.A. Girl, Matte Flat Velvet Lipstick, GLC812 Snuggle
L.A. Girl, Matte Flat Velvet Lipstick, GLC810 Bite Me
Stores Galore!
Finding makeup in Japan can be an adventure in itself! Here are some top spots around Kansai (especially Umeda) to help you stock up on all your glam essentials:
Plaza stores carry a variety of international and Japanese cosmetics. The Plaza in Lucua shopping mall is a personal favorite of mine. ✨
This store has cute eyeshadow palettes and a good selection of eyeliner.
Now I know what you’re thinking. “The department store is too expensive!” While department stores can be pricey, they’re great for discovering high-quality brands. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples or try on products to find your perfect match.
Lucua is packed with beauty stores and boutiques, making it a one-stop shop for all your makeup needs.
Happy Glamming!✨✨✨
When it comes to makeup and glam in Japan, less is often more. The “natural” or “soft” look is highly favored, so sticking to subtle yet effective products can go a long way.
Additionally, if you’re struggling to find makeup that matches your skin tone, don’t hesitate to shop online. Websites like iHerb and Rakuten can be lifesavers.
Glam in Japan isn’t just about makeup or fashion—it’s about confidence and self-expression. With these tips, you’re ready to conquer any event and feel amazing while doing it.
