Maid Up My Mind!
So, you may be wondering what all the hype is about Japanese maid cafes. I’m here to explain why they’re so fascinating to people and why you may want to visit a cafe today!
A Little History
Did you know that Akihabara was home to the first permanent maid cafe (Cure Maid Café)? After many otakus began frequenting these establishments and the media picked up on the unique trend, maid cafes started to spread across Japan. In the 1990s, an economic downturn led people to seek out more intimate social experiences. While maid cafes do not provide sexual services, the warm words, kind attitude, and fan-service approach of the maids provided a comforting experience that some people needed to put a smile on their faces. It’s a bonus that manga and anime elements could combine with reality to provide this unique experience. 🙂
My Experience At Maid Cafes
The two times I’ve been to Japanese maid cafes, I went with different Japanese friends. One wanted the experience because he had never been to a cafe before (He lived in Hiroshima at the time and I don’t think there are many there). The other was considering starting a new business with cosplaying characters or ‘maids’ offering massages (I’m not sure if he ever started it, though!).
Some Maid Cafe Recommendations for the Prince/ Princess
Of course, I’ll recommend the two cafes I visited, as well as one that has a high rating. In Osaka, Nipponbashi is THE place to go for maid cafes. There’s a street lined with them! I highly recommend coming to Namba’s Nipponbashi Street and just walking around. If you don’t take my specific recommendations, you’ll still find something interesting. But be mindful! You’ll most likely need a reservation because you’ll end up waiting hours otherwise.
1)Love♡Carat Maid Cafe
I went here years ago, but I’ll always remember how kind our maid was. Even though my friend was the ‘ouji-sama’ that was supposed to be tended to,I enjoyed it because the maid complimented me, and we ended up going back and forth hyping each other up. Great service and super yummy desserts!
2)At-Home Cafe
This place is highly recommended in Nipponbashi. The atmosphere was nice, and the maids were adorable! They did their jobs very well, and I think they’re highly rated due to their food, reasonable prices, and cute fan-service approach. I was a huge fan of the ‘credit card’ they gave us to keep and use any time we go back.
3)Maidreamin Osaka Nippombashi-Otaroad Store
Over 8,700 reviews?! Wow! This one is very highly recommended! I haven’t been here myself, but I may just have to go and see what the hype is about.
Recommendations for the Ouji-sama/Ohime-sama!
You know I have to recommend some animes to you. Here are three that you may want to consider watching!
1)Kaichou ha Maid-sama
I can’t even begin to explain the grip this show had on me in middle school! I watched it weekly and even finished the manga. I was obsessed! I highly recommend it for a cuteness overload. If you enjoyed Special A, this might be right up your alley. And fun fact: Takumi Usui was crowned “Sexiest Anime Man” of the year and remained top-ranked for a long time.
2)Black Butler
This isn’t about a maid, but rather a demon butler. If you haven’t heard of Sebastian and Ciel, you must be living under a rock! This anime will satisfy your love for action, comedy, and dark fantasy as you follow their adventures.
3)The Maid I Hired Recently Is Mysterious
Come on, if the title didn’t reel you in, I don’t know what will. Yet another series with parents that have passed away, leaving a young heir to the estate. You’ll find the head maid, Lilith, nothing but charming as you wonder what her secret is and what her ulterior motives are for tending to him!
Enjoy Your Stay!
Remember, if you go to a maid cafe, be polite and respectful. Under the makeup and costume, the maids are real people just trying to get through their workday. Look, but don’t touch, and always respect their boundaries!
As someone who isn’t that into maid cafes, I think it’s still a fun experience to have at least once. Butler cafes, though—that’s a different story! I haven’t been but they may have to be a future blog haha. In the meantime, stay happy, healthy, and cute, ouji-sama/ohime-sama! 😉
