One of the sweetest things my husband and I tried this year was making our own rings at Debut ICCI in Tokyo. I didn’t expect it to be as fun and hands-on as it turned out, but honestly, it became one of those rare experiences that stay with you long after the day is over. Crafting your own jewelry is a one-of-a-kind experience that you could do not just as a way to bond or spend your lazy afternoons, but it is also something that lets you in on what it’s really like making rings from scratch.
We went sometime in August, and even though it was our first time crafting jewelry, everything felt easy and relaxed from the moment we stepped inside.
The studio itself is beautiful, very clean, and decorated in that soft, modern Japanese style that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a little creative world. Google Maps made it simple to find, and once we got there, the staff greeted us with the kind of warmth that immediately takes away your nerves. Despite our not being fluent Japanese speakers, they were very patient in helping us and giving us instructions.
They started by helping us measure our ring sizes, which already felt nerve-racking because we had never done that professionally before. Then they handed us aprons and showed us the different materials.
We had choices like silver or gold, plus a few variations for thickness and finish. They explained everything slowly and clearly, so we could really picture what the final ring would look like.
We also had the option to choose gemstones, which made the whole activity feel even more personal. It wasn’t just, “Make a ring.” It was, “Build something that reflects what you like.”
Once we decided on our materials, we sat down at their jewelry craft desks. These tables were fully equipped with tools, tiny decorative items, and everything you’d need to shape the metal.
The staff explained step by step how to hammer the strip of metal into a ring shape. I didn’t expect it to be as satisfying as it was, but hearing that tiny metallic sound with each tap made me feel like I was really creating something from scratch.
After that, we worked on refining the ring by smoothing and polishing the surface. This part took concentration, but again, the staff guided us gently and corrected us when needed. It never felt overwhelming. It was almost therapeutic.
The whole studio was very pretty and aesthetic. There were corners decorated with small plants, lights, and wooden details that looked perfect for photos. The staff actually helped take pictures for us, and they knew exactly which angles to shoot. I didn’t even have to ask. They really made sure we had memories of the process, not just the end result.
The entire activity was smooth and not rushed at all. After everything was finished, they informed us that the rings would be refined even more by their professionals and then shipped to us with a small fee. About a month later, they arrived, perfectly packaged and looking even better than expected.
