What is Tea Time?

Bright, sunny, and full of zest—just like your ideal tea moment.

Specifically, afternoon tea is a lovely tradition—usually taken in the mid-to-late afternoon—where you enjoy tea and sweets, often with pastries or light finger foods. You’ve probably seen it in plenty of British films or period dramas. I know I did! So, you can imagine my surprise when I kept getting invited over for teatime by different friends in Japan.

After nearly eight years of living in Japan, I’ve completely fallen in love with hosting tea time. Inviting people over to my home for tea and cakes reminds me of Southern hospitality from when I lived in Georgia. Only now, I’m fully committed—with actual teacup sets (I’m obsessed with vintage china and teapots, lol), and I always make sure to prepare a homemade dessert or yummy cake in advance.

It’s such a peaceful way to connect—just talking over tea and sweets. Honestly, I don’t know why more people aren’t doing it!

Afternoon Tea Events

So what exactly is an afternoon tea event in Japan? Great question. These are a bit more luxurious than your standard cup of tea at home. Afternoon tea events usually include multi-course tea sets, beautifully plated desserts, seasonal fruit selections, and even themed decor. They’re often held in hotels, department stores, and elegant cafes.

Not just sweets! Tea time in Osaka means gourmet flavors, too.

Just picture something out of a movie—with delicate pastries, savory bites, premium teas, and decorations based on the season or the latest trending character. Depending on the fruit in season, upcoming holidays, or which cute mascot is popular, you’ll find all kinds of seasonal afternoon tea sets throughout Osaka.
