Smile for the Camera!

Flash your brightest smile—oral hygiene tips can make all the difference!

We all know what dentists usually say: brush twice a day, sometimes three times, and don’t forget to floss. But are you actually following those tips?

I have a confession… I’ve been obsessed with oral hygiene since high school. I’m thrilled to share my tried-and-true tips, especially since I’ve recently stepped up my dental care routine. Trust me—you’re in good hands.

And if you’re wondering about my credentials: I’ve never had a cavity, my teeth are naturally white, and I rarely ever get morning breath.

Also, fun fact: I lost my last baby tooth when I was 14. Weird, right?

Why Does It Matter?

Regular dental checkups can help maintain your pearly whites and avoid dental issues.

You might be thinking, “Why does dental care in Japan matter as long as I can still eat my favorite foods?” Well, let me share my mom’s wisdom: Prevent a problem before it becomes one. Don’t wait until your teeth are screaming for help before running to the dentist.

In Japan, there’s a concept called 8020, meaning you should have at least 20 of your adult teeth by the time you’re 80. Take care of your teeth now so they’ll stay strong for a lifetime.

Also, let’s be real—a bright smile and fresh breath can boost your confidence and make people want to be around you. Make sure that person is you!

Dental care isn’t just for humans! Keep your teeth strong with these tips.

Be honest—are you brushing and flossing as much as you should? Are you doing everything you can to keep your teeth healthy?

At the very least, follow these basics:
Brush your teeth first thing in the morning.
Floss before brushing at night.
✰✰✰ Brush your teeth before bed AND DON’T EAT AFTER.

Pro tip: Spend at least 30 seconds brushing each quadrant of your mouth in a circular motion.

The 7AM2m Electric Toothbrush is a game-changer for thorough brushing.

These are the products I personally use and fully recommend. Since I’ve been researching the best Japanese dental care products available in Japan, I’m confident these will help you, too.

Toothbrushes

Two toothpaste options: Crest Whitening Toothpaste and Bio AP 40 whitening toothpaste.

7AM2m Electric Toothbrush

I can’t recommend this toothbrush enough. I love all the settings it offers as well as that it has a 30-second timer that shuts the toothbrush off briefly. It guarantees that you give 30 seconds (over a two-minute duration) to each quadrant of your mouth. I also love that it’s affordable and that I could get my toothbrush in pink. If you get anything off of the list, make sure you get this!

Tooth pastes

Two toothpaste options: Crest Whitening Toothpaste and Bio AP 40 whitening toothpaste.
Switch between these whitening toothpastes for effective results.

I switch between these two toothpastes. I try to use the same toothpaste for at least 14 days in a row just because I personally think that gives the toothpaste enough time to really work. <Don’t ask why I think that.>

*Crest Whitening Toothpaste

I used this back in America all the time. You most likely have to order it online if you don’t have any friends from the States to send it to you. I typically just stock up on it when I visit or tell my friends to bring it when they visit.

*Bio AP 40

I used this all up a month ago and need to get more! This is definitely the best Japanese toothpaste recommendation. It’s also noted to be one of the best whitening toothpastes in Japan.

I personally think it only kept the original whiteness of my teeth and brightened them just a little, but I highly recommend it! The reviews speak for itself.

Gum floss & Tongue Wiper

Gum floss and a pink tongue cleaner on a brown surface, essential tools for oral hygiene.
Don’t forget flossing and cleaning your tongue for a complete dental routine!

The reason I decided to get gum floss is because I feel like it’s a bit more “invasive” and really cleans out the nooks and crannies of your teeth compared to regular floss. I actually looked into it after a client and I had a conversation about dental hygiene.

The tongue cleaner is just from Daiso 😉

Mouthwash

L8020 Lactic Acid Bacteria Mouthwash

This mouthwash targets specific bacteria linked to oral health.

Disclaimer: After having this conversation with that client, I went to my other client who is a dentist and asked about it. He said that he doesn’t fully believe in this specific bacteria that this mouthwash focuses on because it specifically states that lactic acid  bacteria is good for gut health. He questions the ‘super beneficial’ effects of it for mouth health though….

Happy Brushing

I could talk about oral hygiene for hours and share endless tips, but I hope these suggestions help you improve your dental care routine. Remember—you’ve got this! Keep smiling and stay fresh!
