Cooling Pets in the Summer?

Summer in Japan can be very hot and humid, and it can be uncomfortable not only for people but also for pets. Cats, rabbits, dogs, and other small animals can easily feel stressed by the heat, especially if they stay indoors for most of the day and don’t have much time to go for a walk or enjoy the outdoors.

If you have pets at home, it is important to prepare your room and make sure they have a cool, safe place to rest. The summertime in Japan can be very hot and humid, quite uncomfortable for both humans and our furry friends, so it is important to do enough research before the blazing heat of summer officially starts. Here are some simple ways to help keep your pets comfortable during the summer.

1. Use Sunshades for Your Windows

One easy way to reduce heat inside your home is to block direct sunlight. You can buy sunshades or window covers to protect your windows, especially if your room gets strong afternoon sun. They are available in a lot of home goods stores like Viva Homes, Keiyo D2, Joyful Honda and even Nitori or Ikea. If going to a physical store is not possible, they can also be conveniently ordered online and delivered to your door in mere weeks or even days.

This can help stop the room from heating up too much during the day. It is a simple step, but it can make a big difference, especially in apartments that trap heat easily.

2. Use the Air Conditioner

Of course, one of the best ways to keep your pets cool is to use the air conditioner. If your pet stays in one room, you can cool that room and stay there together so you can share the same AC. In certain days that appear to be cooler, setting the ac to dehumidifier mode can also help tremendously in keeping the humidity inside the home under control.

Using the ac 24/7 may be the only option on certain days going up to 35 degrees, but having a designated timer of usage for periods in the day, particularly in the afternoon can also be economical and ecofriendly. This can also help save electricity compared to cooling the whole apartment. Make sure the room is comfortable, not freezing, and that your pet can move away from the direct air if they want to.

3. Try the Dry or Dehumidifier Function

Japan’s summer heat can feel worse because of the humidity. Sometimes, using the dry function on your air conditioner can make the room feel much more comfortable.

The dry function helps reduce humidity, so the air feels less heavy. It may also be cheaper than running full cooling mode all the time, depending on your AC unit and room conditions.

For pets, a room that is dry and comfortable can feel much better than a room that is hot and sticky so it is good to check whether this function is available in the model of ac you are using in your home.

4. Buy Cooling Mats

Cooling mats are also very useful for pets during summer. You can buy them at pet stores, home centers, Amazon, Daiso, Don Quijote, or other shops in Japan. They don’t cost or eat up energy, they are a one-time purchase and reusable for many years, so this is definitely a good investment for you and your furry creatures.

Some pets may not use them right away, especially if they are not used to new things. You can place the cooling mat in their favorite resting area and let them discover it slowly by adding snacks there along with their favorite toys or familiar objects.

Cooling mats are especially helpful because pets can choose when they want to use them. If they feel hot, they can lie down on the mat by themselves and can freely move when it gets too uncomfortable for their liking.

5. Use Cooling Houses or Ice Bottle Setups

There are also small cooling houses or pet shelters that can hold a water bottle or ice pack inside with proper insulation. These can create a cool little space for your pet to rest especially in hot afternoons.

This kind of setup can be very helpful for cats, dogs, rabbits and small pets because it gives them a shaded, cooler area. Just make sure the bottle or ice pack is secure and not leaking or add protection if your pet likes to nip new objects. Also, avoid placing anything too cold directly against your pet’s body for a long time as this may not be good for their fur.

The goal is to give them a cool option, not to make them too cold.

6. Keep the Room Well Ventilated

Ventilation is also important. A room can become hot and stuffy if the air does not move well. You can use a fan to help circulate air, but make sure it is not blowing directly on your pet all the time.

If you open windows, be careful with safety. Cats, rabbits, and small pets can escape or get injured if windows or balcony doors are not properly secured.

Good airflow can help the room feel fresher and more comfortable.

7. Improve Your Pet’s Resting Area

You can also make your pet’s area cooler by adding better insulation or choosing a better location in the room. Avoid placing their bed, cage, or pen near direct sunlight, hot windows, or appliances that produce heat. Add insulation sheets on your windows or the areas that are prone to heat

For rabbits, ceramic tiles, metal plates, or cooling boards can be helpful. For cats, a cool floor area, shaded corner, or cooling bed can work well.

Observe where your pet naturally likes to res and keep that particular spot breathable and cooler. Sometimes they already know the coolest spot in the room. Have a thermometer there as well so you can easily monitor the temperature at all times.

8. Use Water Carefully

Some pets may benefit from a small amount of water to help them cool down, but this should be done carefully. For example, you can lightly dampen your hands and gently touch their ears or fur if they tolerate it.

However, not all pets like being sprayed with water. Cats and rabbits can get stressed if they are suddenly sprayed, so it is better to be gentle and avoid forcing it.

Always watch your pet’s reaction. If they seem scared or uncomfortable, stop and try another cooling method instead.

9. Make Sure They Have Fresh Water

Fresh drinking water is very important during summer. Make sure your pet always has access to clean water. You may need to refill it more often because water can get warm quickly in hot weather. Some people like to invest in water fountains as many animals like running water as opposed to stale water.

You can place extra water bowls in different areas so they have more chances to drink. If your pet does not drink much, you can also ask a vet for safe ways to encourage hydration.

10. Watch for Signs of Overheating

It is important to pay attention to your pet’s behavior during hot days. If your pet is breathing heavily, lying flat and not moving much, drooling, acting weak, refusing food, or looking unusual, they may be too hot.

Rabbits, in particular, can be sensitive to heat. Cats may also hide when they are uncomfortable. If something feels wrong, it is better to contact a vet quickly and not wait for the situation to get worse.

Why this is Important This Summer

Keeping pets cool during summer in Japan takes a little planning, but it does not have to be complicated. Sunshades, AC, dry mode, cooling mats, good ventilation, fresh water, and a comfortable resting area can all help.

The most important thing is to observe your pet. Every animal is different. Some pets love cooling mats right away, while others need time to get used to them. Some like cool floors, while others prefer shaded corners or small houses.

Summer can be uncomfortable, but with the right setup, your pets can stay safe, cool, and relaxed at home.
