Exercise in Japan

I’ve talked about exercising in Japan and staying healthy numerous times. It’s something I’m truly passionate about, and you can see that if you check out any of my past articles about beauty and health:

Trust me, you are in good hands if you’re hoping to learn about fitness in Japan.

Of course, there are all kinds of ways to exercise in Japan. I’ve been to the gym, I’ve tried the trampoline jumping classes, aerial yoga, and so much more in Japan. Most likely, you’re picturing going to a gym somewhere in the city. But there are actually many different options available to you if you’re living here.

Why is Exercising in Japan Different?

One thing I love about Japan is that you may actually be exercising without even realizing it.

Here are a few cultural and lifestyle differences to consider when it comes to working out in Japan:

1)It’s almost impossible NOT to walk everywhere.

Most people don’t have cars, and walking culture is extremely common. Getting your steps in daily is basically built into your lifestyle.

2)The seasons can be intense.

Japan has extremely hot summers and very cold winters, which can make outdoor workouts difficult…especially during humid Japanese summers.

3)Living spaces are smaller.

Japanese apartments aren’t always very spacious, so working out at home often means getting creative in a small area.

5 Easy Exercise Tips

Here are some fun and realistic ways to exercise in Japan that can easily fit into your daily routine.

1.Gyms

I know you’ve probably already thought about going to the gym. Some common gyms you’ll see around Japan include:

-Urbanfit 24

-FIT PLACE24

-Anytime Fitness

-JOYFIT

-RIZAP (more of a boutique/personal training gym)

-LAVA ( very well known for their hot yoga)

-ChocoZAP ( while I am no longer a member of chocoZAP, you can check out my previous article about this affordable gym option at less than 4,000 Yen a month at this link here.)

These are great options if you feel like you need extra motivation or want guidance from a trainer (minus chocoZAP, which is a trainer-free gym).

2. Stair Workouts

Please just hear me out.

This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to exercise in Japan. It’s perfect if you’re trying to burn calories and build leg muscle.

Japan is FULL of stairs, just check around train stations and you’ll see what I mean. Try walking around areas with lots of stations and make it a point to go up and down the stairs as you move around.

Places like Umeda are perfect for this. You can walk, shop (carrying bags = arm day for your workout ), and climb stairs all in one trip.

 3. Arcade Workouts

We are literally in Japan! You have to take advantage of the arcades.

Going to places like Round1 and playing games like Dance Dance Revolution is actually such a fun way to work up a sweat.

It’s a great cardio workout, and the best part is that you’re having so much fun, you don’t even realize you’re exercising. Plus, it’s really satisfying to see yourself improve over time.

4. Karaoke

This is honestly one of my favorite “workouts.” Whether you go alone or with friends, karaoke in Japan is more than just fun~ it’s actually a light, full-body workout.

Singing works your core and lungs. Standing and dancing adds movement. Not to mention it helps reduce stress (which is super important for overall health). You can even improve your Japanese while singing your favorite anime songs while you’re at it!

10/10, I highly recommend. Hence, why I go religiously.

5)Home Workouts

This is actually what I decided to do as my main workout for spring. Using my Nintendo Switch, I decided to play the Ring Fit Adventure game. It’s great because it’s beginner-friendly and great for small apartments. To reduce noise, I bought a workout (sound-cancelling) mat so I don’t disturb my neighbors, which is VERY important in Japan.

I like that this is something I can do in my own time at my own pace, and I really don’t have any excuse not to, since it’s easy to do in my cute little Japanese apartment.

Even if you don’t use Ring Fit, there are hundreds of at-home workout videos online that are perfect for small spaces.

Why not give it a try?
