Omotesando: What to Know

Omotesando is a tree-lined avenue in Tokyo, known as an upscale area teeming with luxury boutiques and architectural hot spots and chic cafés. It stretches from the entrance of Meiji-jingu Shrine to Aoyama Street and is surrounded by other iconic landmarks such as Yoyogi Park, Takeshita Dori, and Tokyu Plaza Harajuku or ”Harakado”.

Due to its refined atmosphere, the avenue is often referred to as the Champs-Élysées of Tokyo, earning its reputation as a sought-after fashion destination.

While known as a glitzy fashion hub, Omotesando is also a culinary destination in its own right. In recent years, its food scene has gained momentum, with an increasing number of dining establishments opening in the area. To help you choose from a plethora of eating spots, here are 6 of the best cafes you can check out:

&t Café

&t Café is situated in a quiet backstreet of Omotesando, hidden from the main thoroughfare. It’s tucked down a narrow passageway, providing a perfect spot to relax and unwind. Once you enter the café, you’ll notice the Mediterranean-inspired interior—white walls, white furniture, and lush greenery. In an instant, you’ll feel like dining on a tropical island.

As for the menu, the café serves organic dishes made from locally-sourced products. The options include curry (keema curry – \1,200 / chicken curry – \1,200 / chicken and keema curry – \1,500 / zeitaku curry – \1,980), sandwiches, salads, desserts, and drinks.

Another great thing about this café is it’s pet-friendly, so you can enjoy your meal with the company of your furry friend.

Angelina Café

This elegant salon de thé was first established in Rue de Rivoli, Paris in 1903. With a history spanning more than 120 years, they take great pride in their indulgent pastries and classic hot chocolate. The exceptional quality of their products has gained them patrons both locally and internationally, opening over 30 boutiques and tea rooms around the globe. In 2024, they unveiled a branch in Japan—a posh tearoom, with a similar interior design to the Paris branch, on the 2nd floor of Tokyo Plaza Harajuku.

If you’re visiting for the first time at this café, you must try one of Angelina’s signature items—the Mont Blanc dessert—which is made of chestnut paste, whipped cream, and crispy meringue. It comes in different flavors—original, rich chocolate, and seasonal flavors like matcha, orange caramel, espresso, and sakura.

To balance out the sweet stuff, try the savory offerings like croque madame (grilled ham and cheese sandwich with fried egg on top), croque monsieur (grilled ham and cheese sandwich with béchamel sauce), club sandwich, avocado toast, and lasagna.

For drinks, they serve hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and alcoholic beverages.

Higuma Doughnuts x Coffee Wrights

This doughnut shop has gotten all the hype for a reason. Not only is this shop aesthetically pleasing (with floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden fixtures), but it also serves top-tier doughnuts made with Hokkaido ingredients.

At present, Higuma doughnuts has three locations in Tokyo. But the branch in Omotesando (which is a collaboration with Coffee Wrights) gets all the buzz.

Upon entering the café, you’ll immediately see the cashier and some coffee products neatly lined up on the shelves. It’s easy to pick the doughnuts you’d like to try, thanks to the pictures and plastic food displayed near the counter. Once you’ve placed your order, you can pay using a credit card, IC card, or mobile app. Take note that they don’t accept cash.

What sets Higuma Doughnuts apart from other brands is their fluffy and light texture. They also have the right amount of sweetness and are less oily. You can choose from a variety of flavors, as shown in the picture above.
