Getting sick is never fun, and it’s even worse if you’re unsure where to find the right medicine for your symptoms. This article is your ultimate guide to Japanese over-the-counter (OTC) medication—perfect to keep in your home medicine cabinet.

The variety of medicines available in Japan might feel overwhelming at first, especially with language barriers. Luckily, most drugstores in Japan, such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi or Tsuruha Drug, are well-stocked with trusted brands that can help you tackle common health issues.(Of course, online is also an option as well~)

Of course, if your symptoms are severe or persistent, it’s crucial to visit a doctor for professional advice. But for minor issues, having the right medicines on hand can save you a late-night trip to the pharmacy.

Friendly Tip: Don’t wait until you’re unwell to buy these essentials. Stock up in advance so you’re prepared for emergencies.

A Little Hot-Headed With a Fever? Here’s the Cure!

If you’re experiencing fever or cold symptoms, these Japanese medicines can help:

Osaka Amazing Pass

This pill-based medicine is my go-to for fever reduction. It’s easy to take—just wash it down with water or your favorite non-alcoholic drink. You’ll feel better in no time!

1) パブロン(Pabaron)

Herbal medicine preparations often found in Japanese and holistic pharmacies.

This one is to help reduce fevers.

This is a pill form of medication that I recommend. Drink it with water or your favorite drink and you’ll be better in no time.

2) Bron Liquid Ace

This is hands down my favorite Japanese medicine. It has a pleasantly sweet taste, making it easier to swallow than most cold remedies. Use it for coughs, runny noses, allergies, and more.

Remember: Only take it when you’re sick, and follow the recommended dosage!

3)パンシロンキュア/ Pansilon Cure

This medicine is specifically designed for acid reflux. There was a time when I struggled with daily reflux, and it kept me awake at night. Pansilon Cure worked wonders for me, and I’m sure it can help you too.

If you’re dealing with GERD, check out my article on dietary tips for managing symptoms:

If acid reflux is a recurring issue, consider seeing a gastroenterologist for proper testing and personalized treatment.

4) EVE Headache Medication

EVE is a lifesaver for headaches and PMS-related pain. While it’s marketed as a menstrual pain reliever, anyone can use it. Take two tablets with water, relax, and let the medication work its magic. The relief is usually quick!

There are many different types of EVE headache tablets, such as EVE Quick and EVE A, so be sure to look at the differences between both and choose which one you think will heal your headache woes.

Aches and Pans

5)SALONPAS

If you’ve ever sprained your ankle, pulled a muscle, or just dealt with everyday aches, SALONPAS patches are a must-have. Last year, I injured my foot and later my hand (what a streak, right?). These patches helped reduce the pain significantly. They’re convenient and easy to use—just stick one on the affected area and go about your day.

6)Loxonin S (gel)

My orthopedic prescribed this to me for my hand when he said I was suffering from arthtritis in my hands. I actually didn’t know it came in pill form until doing research for this article. It seems there are many options. I was quite pleased with the gel my doctor gave me because it was a topical gel I applied on the top of my hand.

Professional Help From a Pro!

Sometimes, OTC medicines aren’t enough. If your symptoms persist or worsen, visit a clinic or hospital. Here are a few options I want to recommend in the Umeda/Osaka area:

Please stay healthy in the meantime.

Fujimoto Orthopedic Surgical Clinic

The doctors/nurses were so sweet here. Even though I wasn’t feeling the best, the doctor and I were able to laugh together and the nurses and I talked about Inuyasha haha. Go here for a light-hearted experience.

Kitano Hospital

There is a main hospital right in the center of Umeda, but I imagine that hospital may be packed with people since it is in the center of the city. I want to recommend this one that is a bit away from Umeda and that not many people may know about it. Check the high ratings it has~~~

Ishimura Internist and Cardiology

I think I’ve been to this place twice. If you have a serious emergency make sure to tell them upfront. The wait time (as in most Japanese hospitals/clinics) is a while, so be prepared for that and make sure to advocate for yourself in emergency situations.

Happy Healing!

Keep these stocked in your homes in case of emergencies for when you can’t get out your home to get them. I really hope that my article helps you and that you can stay as healthy as possible this year so that you don’t need to use them :). Again, please be sure to check out the doctor if you are very concerned about your symptoms or if they are not getting better.
